I love all continental football / soccer tournaments out there, but there is really something special about the Africa Cup of Nations, or AFCON. There are so many different relevant countries that it feels like the Euros, but the sporting culture is so foreign that it can’t help but be intriguing. The intense emotional investment that every country has in AFCON, in a football-mad continent, is another thing that makes the tournament a must-watch.
As many times as something weird happens, something brilliant happens, and then something weird happens again, and then something amazing happens again. Nations like Sierra Leone that feature nearly entirely domestic squads match up with world stars like Salah, Mane, and Mahrez… and they hold their own. The Africa Cup of Nations features a larger-than-normal amount of upsets, in fact, so strap in, this is going to be one wild ride to bring you up to speed.
Much love,
The Zealand
