It was a beloved if unrealistic staple of football manager for years. Lofting the ball into the box to create chaos and score some free goals. Really, the most effective set piece in the game. But, probably because every team in the world is NOT Iceland, FM has seen fit to nerf long throws so hard it’s like they don’t even exist anymore. They shut down this beautiful set piece in an incredibly annoying way that is still bothering me, as discussed in the video, but long term this was probably the right decision.
There is a delicate balance for football manager between making a good match engine and keeping the tactic side clear of exploits. As the numbers showed, long throws were scoring A LOT more than they do in real life. I suppose that is an exploit, considering FM throws numbers around for free-kick goal accuracy when that sort of thing is discussed. Good for them for fixing it then. It is just bad for us because we lose offense.
