If you want to succeed at transfers in Football Manager, there is a simple truth that you need to understand. Trying to emulate real-life with high-priced, big-name, fancy signings will only work if you are already one of the biggest clubs in the world. In FM you are more often trying to catch up with the big boys, and year after year I find myself doing that the same way. So, this is me laying out that trusted path to follow.
It sounds unorthodox but Football Manager provides you with the tools to seek out people that improve your team that do not cost the health of your finances. You will always have less money AND less gravitas than the teams you are trying to catch in FM, which means you have to be creative in the way you are going to catch them. The same transfer policy with less money and pull is a surefire way to fade into Football Manager obscurity.
