My Dentist's Actual Reaction When I Told Her I Was Taking Provadent

  • As part of testing the site some of you will find there are already accounts created under your name. I have sent an email to most (if not all) of you which if you reply I can send you over the login details so you can take the account over.

If you didn't get an email just contact me on twitter (@creators_fm) and I will sort it out.

So this is a bit different from most posts I see about this stuff. I didn't come here to hype it up or trash it — I came here because I straight up asked my dentist about it at my last cleaning and figured people might actually want to know what she said, since most of us don't have easy access to a dentist's honest opinion on random supplements.

Background: I'm 41, I've had two fillings replaced in the last three years, and my gums recede a little every time I go in, which my dentist has mentioned more than once in that polite-but-concerned way dentists do. I don't smoke, I don't drink soda, I brush fine. It's just... my mouth doesn't seem to bounce back the way it used to. Getting older, I guess.

My sister-in-law is the one who brought up Provadent. She'd been using it for her bad breath issue and said her dentist didn't object when she mentioned it. That was enough for me to at least look into it instead of dismissing it outright.

Before buying anything I did what I'd tell anyone to do — I looked up the actual ingredients instead of trusting the sales page. It's mostly xylitol, a cranberry extract, purple carrot powder, and a handful of probiotic strains. Nothing in there struck me as sketchy or made me nervous, which honestly is more than I can say for half the stuff advertised in my Instagram feed.

I bought a two-month supply and mentioned it casually at my next cleaning, mostly expecting my dentist to shrug it off or roll her eyes a little. She didn't. Her actual response was something like, "there's nothing in there that would hurt you, and the probiotic angle for oral bacteria balance is something researchers are actually looking into more seriously now." She was careful to say she wasn't personally recommending it and that it's not a replacement for cleanings or normal care, which felt like the honest, non-salesy answer I actually wanted.

So here's what happened using it for about six weeks:

The gum recession obviously didn't reverse — nothing was going to fix that with a capsule, and I never expected it to. What did change was how my gums felt day to day. Less tender, less that raw feeling after flossing that made me want to skip flossing some nights. My breath also held up longer through the day, which sounds minor but if you've dealt with that "did I brush three hours ago or was that yesterday" feeling, you know it's not nothing.

I didn't notice any whitening effect, despite some pages online making that claim. My teeth look the same color they did before. I'd take that claim with a grain of salt if that's your main reason for buying it.

Side effect wise, the only thing worth mentioning is my stomach felt slightly off for about four days when I started, which lines up with what I've read about introducing new probiotics. It settled on its own and I didn't have any issues after that first week.

A couple things I wish I'd known before ordering:

It's only sold through their own website, so don't waste time looking for it at your local pharmacy or on Amazon — I checked both and came up empty. The one-bottle price is honestly kind of steep for what it is, so if you're going to try it, the multi-bottle bundle brings the cost down enough that it feels more reasonable. And don't expect fast results — the first couple weeks genuinely felt like nothing was happening, so if you give up early you probably won't notice anything at all.

Would I tell someone to run out and buy it? Not blindly. But if you've got the kind of nagging gum sensitivity or breath issue that never fully goes away no matter how well you brush, and your dentist isn't waving a red flag about you trying a probiotic supplement, I don't think it's an unreasonable thing to test out for a couple months, especially with the refund window as a safety net.

I'm not selling anything and I don't have a link to drop. Just wanted to share the dentist conversation since that's usually the part missing from every other post about this.
